A2 Media G325: An Introduction: 12/06/14

A2 Media G325: An Introduction: 12/06/14

As a former AS student I am both thrilled and extactic to be continuing my work  with Media Studies. Here are the first set of notes from my first lesson of A2.

-          “The Journey” how have your skills expanded from AS?

1A:

-          Postmodernism (meaning ‘after modernism, a reaction against modernism’)

-          Digital Technology

-          Creativity

-          Research and Planning

-          Post Production

-          Using conventions for red text

1B:

-          Genre

-          Narrative

-          Representation

-          Audience

-          Class Notes

-          Independence Research

Post modernism is a genre- a relevant theory. Post Modern/ modern texts have shared modern conventions- both challenge typical conventions before them (modern rebelling). Modernism ridicules the past. ‘Pomo’ are nostalgic toward old ways.

2 Hour Exam:

2 questions on coursework = 25 each = 50

Media question theory = 50

Total = 100

Section B Contemporary Media Issues:

Subject: Post-Modernism genre

- Case Studies = films/video games/ TV/ music videos

- Issues and debates

- Own independent research

- Contemporary issues

- Audience and Industry

Pessimistic view on Pomo: Art is always to be repeated. Nothing is original, for every idea has seemed to already have been taken.

Optimistic view on Pomo: Combing old elements to make something unique altogether.

A Style and concept in the arts characterized by the distrust of theories and ideologies and by the drawing of attention to conventions.

         Self-contradicting                                                  Irony

Post Modernism: How to spot it:

-Irony

-Playing with conventions

-Black humour

-Intertextuality

- Pastiche

- Magic realism

- Different perspective

- Pushing the boundaries

H/W: My first thoughts on how to define Post Modernism:

A late 20th century style on where a form of art diminishes all regarding modernism, defined by earlier styles and conventions

E.g. - The Simpsons is classed Pomo.
